Between 1999 and 2008 there were 340,559 total crimes reported in Maine (14,529 of them violent). This includes 202 murders, 3,362 rapes, and just about two hundred and fifty-nine thousand thefts (including 13,998 car thefts).
In the course of the most recent 10 years, crime data were available in Maine for all 10 years. Throughout that period, reported crime in Maine has been reduced by 6%. Throughout that same period of time, violent crime climbed by 9%. By and large, the crime data indicate a general improvement in crime over the last 10 years in Maine. If the current trend continues, predicted crime numbers could fall to thirty-three thousand for Maine in 2009.
